A Fashion-Forward Netflix Binge

By Kassidy McDonald

Looking for some fashion inspiration while you're stuck inside your home? Tired of rewatching the same classic movies like the Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City? Here are some documentaries, movies, and series involving fashion that you may have never even heard of to keep you busy while you're stuck inside.

Jeremy Scott: The People's Designer

Netflix Documentary

This documentary tells the story of how Jeremy Scott went from a small-town farm boy to one of the most iconic names in fashion. The documentary follows a timeline of his life starting from early childhood on his Missouri farm, where he was bullied for his sexuality and being different from the kids around him. It details his successes as a creative director for Moschino and includes celebrity cameos like Miley Cyrus, A$AP Rocky, and Lady Gaga. The film goes in-depth and gives insight into Scott's unique pop art style and how he overcame so many obstacles to be accepted and admired in the world of fashion.

7 Days Out Episode: Chanel Fashion Show

Netflix Episode

7 Days Out is a series that details major events starting one week out to show the preparation leading up to the big day. The series features events ranging from the Kentucky Derby to the finale of the Cassini space-research mission, and none other than Karl Lagerfield's Chanel Couture Show. The episode goes into immense detail of how the behind the scenes of a major fashion house produces a runway show. This episode specifically details the Spring/Summer 2018 Haute Couture Show and how Chanel brings an idea to life - starting from sketches and ending with a final runway. From picking models to designing the set, this episode gives viewers the full experience. Viewers also get an inside look at how much planning and work goes into Paris Fashion Week for designers to make impactful statements. All the work up to the final minutes before the runway show will leave you at the edge of your seat.

Next In Fashion

Netflix Series: 1 season, 10 episodes

Similar to Project Runway, Next In Fashion is a fashion design competition show. The contestants all have impressive experience, many of them having styled popular celebrities or having worked in major fashion houses. The show highlights the creative process a designer goes through when creating a garment from scratch. Each episode has a different challenge, whether it's athleisure, streetwear, or red carpet, and contestants are usually paired up to add to the drama. Viewers get to see sketching, picking of fabrics, garment execution, and the final looks are then judged during a runway show. For anyone who enjoys Project Runway or likes fashion design, this series is easy to binge.

Glow Up

Netflix Series: 1 season, 8 episodes

While this series isn't about fashion, it is relevant to design. Glow Up is a beauty competition show where 10 makeup artists compete in multiple editorial challenges to ultimately win a contract. The series highlights the artistic side of the beauty industry and gives viewers an inside look as to makeup artists' creative processes when presented with a challenge or theme. When a contestant wins a challenge, their work is featured in a magazine editorial. The two artists who create the judges' least favorite looks have to compete in skills challenges. If you love beauty and makeup, or are looking for some inspiration, I highly recommend this series.

Maddman: The Steve Madden Story

Netflix Documentary

This documentary details the story of how Steve Madden had to rebuild his entire life after being in prison. The documentary highlights how many people are familiar with the Steve Madden brand, namely shoes, but unfamiliar with the designer himself. Viewers firsthand see the product life beginning with the design process that Madden and his team go through to create and then sell a pair of shoes. Madden is all about speed and success. His shoes remain fresh and affordable to consumers. This documentary really goes further to show who he is as a designer and his legacy.
