Moschino Says, Let Them Eat Cake!

By Kassidy McDonald

Thursday night iconic camp designer Jeremy Scott debuted Moschino FW 2020 collection in Milan - but if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought this show was set in Paris.

The show and collection took inspiration from the French Revolution era, featuring circle hoop skirts, gigantic eccentric wigs, voluminous frills, and intricate ribbons. Top models, including Bella and Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Irina Shayk, and Romee Strijd were among the iconic names who walked.

The show began with a classic French color scheme - white, off white, gold trimmings, and even grays and blacks. Scott kept the outfits modern and not completely costume by adding his trademark leather belts, bags, and jackets as well as chain accessories.

The looks became increasingly more colorful and introduced prints - while still maintaining classic French details or silhouettes to tie it all together. Scott’s runway had a baroque yet modern and bright feel. The setting created a luxurious ambiance with mirrors, draped curtains, and chandeliers lining the entire catwalk, making one feel as if they were in the Palace of Versailles.

Many of Scott’s quirky details presented themself towards the end of the show, with one of the main themes being Parisian food. Guests were given a clue to this runway theme due to their invitations featuring cakes. The brand’s Instagram posted a video version of the invitation on the day of the show, inviting viewers to stream it live on their website. The video featured a large pink and white cake being decorated while French music played in the background.

Model Joan Smalls donned one of the statement cake circle dresses, tiered to look as if she were covered in white-piped frosting. Kaia Gerber rocked a pink tiered cake handbag down the runway while Gigi Hadid carried a pastry box handbag to compliment her overcoat covered in pink, red, and white flowers.

Scott closed the show with a statement that guests and viewers wouldn’t forget, a circle skirt all-white wedding gown that resembled a wedding cake. What celebrity or fashionista do you predict will wear this at her upcoming nuptials?
